The great Cubist pictures were meditations on the intrinsic character of the detached C�zannesque facets and contours, out of which the almost-illegible images were built. Some classical scholars, however, were noted for their daring depictions of lives of the common people, often to the displeasure of authorities. A damper climate unsuited to fresco painting encouraged the early use of oils, while differing skills and temperament led to the early espousal of printmaking, and the the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1450s.
