In the face of a world divested of meaning, where no religious anchorage can provide relief, where the yawning abyss of nihilism always grows deeper and bigger in front of us, how exactly can we lead our lives without succumbing to either suicide or pessimism? Highly influential in both architecture and design, its teachers included Josef Albers, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers and Johannes Itten.

Here one learns how to see further and go deeper than in 'modern' life, which is generally so very much more superficial despite its wealth of outer forms." Being and Nothingness is perhaps his most important work about existentialism. The Separatists sought a complete dismantling of the Church of England, espousing a strict Congregationalist model that rejected any administrative or ecclesiastical hierarchy beyond the authority of the local congregations. This is brought on by the realization that no matter how long one parties and drinks and cavorts, or in the second case, no matter how many books are studied and lectures attended, the secrets to life and a happy existence are simply not to be found in this fashion.

In a European publication concerned with contemporary aspects of Gnosticism, Ioan Culianu writes: Once I believed that Gnosticism was a well-defined phenomenon belonging to the religious history of Late Antiquity. He smiled when the old man shot him with the twelve-gauge." She has now written a surprisingly sparkling book about its history and principal figures, which is, happily, more concerned than many philosophical texts with this interesting question: why did existentialism, unlike most other philosophical movements, persuade its devotees to dress up in a certain way, pull faces and listen to Juliette Gréco? (Wittgenstein was mad keen on the movies of Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda, but I never heard of any of his followers imitating him in this regard.) Reassuringly, not even the professional existentialist philosophers could always understand what they were talking about.

The term "absurd" was first used to describe literary works by Albert Camus. Instead, they were after an ethic of a larger kind, an ethics of "authenticity" or what we would call personal integrity. The power of a state was determined by how well it could make room and allowance for those that did not conform. Hence no objective description of this environment could be of any use to us. The symbolists agreed that the imagination was by far superior to reason alone in enhancing meaning from verbal or visual cues.

We noted that the philosophy of existence is essentially the affirmation that existence has no essence (thereby going further than merely stating that essence comes after existence). In the 18th century, however, a popular fascination emerged in England, giving rise to the "literature of lament" and the Gothic romance.
