William Gibson, an American transplanted to Vancouver, is the best known of the cyberpunk writers. Those kinds of writers don’t just see the future; they see the present. Her poon will only stick to steel, iron, or (slightly) to nickel. These writers create a world where individuals can download their consciousness into computers and thus live forever as in Gibson's Neuromancer, where the mind can be re-entered and reprogrammed as in Pat Cadigan's Mind Games, or where we can live most of the time in imaginary identities, as in much of Stephenson's works.

A pale imitation of the latter, Nowhere Man, also briefly appeared. Author Tim Maughan has just released a new collection of science fiction short stories titled Paintwork. Fans of old science fiction may enjoy what they see. So over the years I've produced dozens of sketch maps of the culvas circles, the circuits or the levels of consciousness. A reading of important cyberpunk novels shows the way in which the ideas of formal urban theory, such as the idea of global cities, cities as communication systems, and the Los Angeles school of urban studies, have been incorporated into this facet of popular culture.

Why are we celebrating Wells and Star Trek now, in this sci-fi special (which includes our long-running Futures sci-fi series presented as a graphic novel for the first time )? Many people include alternate reality novels as science fiction but I didn’t feel comfortable having them on the list as there’s not much science in that sort of fiction. Cyberpunk is a science fiction genre in which the future world is portrayed as one in which society is largely controlled by computers, at the expense of daily life and social order.
